How often are the electricity rates updated?
We update our electricity rate data monthly from the EIA's Electric Power Monthly report[reference:35]. Public charging rates are updated weekly from AAA data[reference:36].

EV Charging Cost Calculator Methodology

Our calculator is built on three pillars: accuracy, transparency, and real-world relevance.

  • Data sources: EIA for residential and commercial rates[reference:37], AAA for public charging[reference:38], and EPA/Cars.com for vehicle efficiency[reference:39].
  • Calculation: Cost per mile = (kWh per 100mi ÷ 100) × rate per kWh. This is then scaled to per-charge, monthly, and annual costs based on a 60 kWh battery and 1,000/12,000 miles per month/year.
  • Verification: We cross-check our estimates with real-world user reports and utility tariff schedules. Discrepancies are investigated and corrected.
  • Update frequency: Rates are refreshed monthly; vehicle data is updated quarterly as new models are released.
